This video has three parts to it. In the first part Coach Collier talks about coaches’ responsibilities vs. players.  She covers the mindset differences of players and coaches and how she transitioned from Player to Coach and what is necessary to impart your knowledge as a coach to the players.

In the second part of this video Coach Collier will go over all of Georgia Tech’s rotations and show you the different options that they run to set up a “one on one” for their hitters.  In each rotation she will show you three or four plays that they run to provide a “one on one” for her hitters.

In the final part of the video, she will go over different drills that will allow you to teach the skills needed to be able to successfully attack in this situation.

Choosing the Right Offensive System for Your Team

Learn ‘what’ goes into choosing the right offense for your team and ‘why’.  Coach Collier goes through her thought process when coming up with the right system for her team.  “Identify and understand what your team priorities are” and then “implement what is needed to accomplish those priorities”!  Also as important - Know your athletes abilities so whatever you come up with is not too complicated to run based on the skill levels of your players.

Coach Collier also reviews what she calls ‘The 4 E’s’ that represent core values that you can use to anchor your volleyball program to effectively train and develop players, as well as to foster a positive team culture and – going one step further -- to execute an efficient and fast offensive system.

Some of the topics covered in this section are:

  • Coaches role vs. players role and their individual expectations
  • How players and coaches see the same things differently and how to teach skills based on those differences
  • The need to set core values for your team and implement them in all of your practices (as well as in games!)
  • Coach Collier’s own experience - going from ‘player mindset’ to ‘coach mindset’ and the differences in each

Breakdown of Rotations and What Plays to Run in Each of Them

In this part, Coach Collier goes through all six rotations in serve receive and will chart out two or three plays in every rotation that they can run to provide a quick offense.  She explains the match ups and the personnel she has in each rotation and then goes over the best options for their team to score in each of these.

  • Learn how to set up your offense to spread out the defense and allow for a 1 on 1 situation for your hitters.
  • Learn how to create a gap in the block and then how to attack the gaps.
  • Learn to recognize the weaknesses in the defensive block that creates opportunities for your hitter

Drills to Aid in the Development of Your Hitters

In the largest segment of the video, Coach Collier shares the drills that they use to help the hitters to be able to run an effective fast offense.  Collier also highlights a blocker in many of the drills and covers ways in which you can use the block to your advantage.

Some of the drills include:

Self-Toss Attacking Warm-up

This warm up drill forces the players to have to “time” the ball and take the correct closing steps.  Collier shows how you can progress to a bounce pass which adds an additional element of randomness that will force the player to analyze the height of the ball and then decide if they are to speed up or slow down their approach.

3D Drill

This drill shows the hitters getting three quick sets in a row all at different places on the net.  Collier does a good job explaining how the hitter needs to approach on each of the three different sets.  This is done at all three positions on the net and each approach is different.  It is a very effective drill to work on hitter transitions as well.

Hitter transition with live setter

This is a great drill to create the randomness you find in a game.  It forces the hitter to work on a quick transition and then make a good decision as to what set to call.  It includes every element of the game from the hitter’s perspective.  This drill has hitters in all three positions and again creates a randomness that forces the hitters to think.  It's fast moving and can accommodate either a small or large number of players which is good if you have varying size groups. You can also include your back row players in this and work on the back row attack.

This is one of the most useful, information-filled and interesting instructional volleyball videos ever. Both new coaches and seasoned coaches alike will draw a lot of new information of value throughout all parts of the video!

Coach Collier is one of the most successful, rising coaches in the game today and this video will not only show you why she is consistently succeeding and growing her program, but will also help you and your program gain a foothold on insightful, growth-oriented ideas and drills as you navigate your seasons ahead!

Collier provides you with the principles and tools to be a more effective coach and to run a more efficient, dynamic offense. Her on-court instructional lesson also outlines creative tips and proven methods for speeding up your team’s offense and attack efficiency. If you’re looking for new ways to attack opponents offensively, while remaining efficient and productive, then this is a must-watch video for you!
